Feet and Rings

We learned about different feet and how to make internal and external rings.

The external ring is created after the transfer. Use the jacks on the inside of the piece. Be careful not to touch the lip. Push hard upward about midway on the piece. This creates a bulge on the surface of the piece. Use the jacks on the outside to squeeze the ring together. One blade on either side of the bulge ring and try to bring the blades to parallel.

The Internal Ring is created by making a jack line deep into the body of the piece. Using the paper or jacks press the two areas together. Be careful to push in a consistent manner to keep the piece centered and a good connection. Be sure to get a full connection all the way around the piece. Heat and blow just a bit to check for that connection.

The Martini Foot is created by jacking firmly near the bottom of the piece. Maybe just a quarter of the whole. Jack very deeply. Partner is blowing too. Create a real tight line and a nice round bulb at the end. Diameter is about the same as the body of the piece.
Partner uses a paddle to compress the foot. Use the jacks to control shape and do not allow the foot to touch back onto the body of the glass.
The Roman Foot is created with a taper. Heat the bottom of the glass and use the jacks to make a controlled taper at the bottom of the piece. Heat a bit deeper and partner blows creating a bulbous end. Do not over blow. The bulbous part becomes the foot and it can it very large very quickly. Watch your heat here to so as not to blow the body out, just the foot area. Gaffer paddles the foot flat. Partner blows just a bit as the paddle is at an angle and then stops blowing as soon as the paddle goes parallel .
